This month’s Guidecraft Educator review and giveaway is for the Community Buildings (set of 6). These buildings are colorfully-painted and made of durable plywood.
Buildings include:
- Hospital
- School
- Police Station
- Fire Station
- Store
- Service Station
Each building has a 3.5″ high opening and is approximately 6.5″W x 5.75″D x 6.5″H. These Community Buildings work really well with toys you may already have, like blocks, small people figures, a train table, cars, and trucks, as well as some of the other Guidecraft sets, like the Roadway System and Block Play Traffic Signs. My kids had so much fun setting up a city with me on our train table!
These buildings would be perfect as part of a community helpers unit in a preschool or kindergarten classroom (or early child homeschool classroom). Children can explore different careers by using their imaginations to create communities. The children went to school in the school bus, the fire truck went in the fire station, the race car got gas at the service station, the people purchased vegetables at the store, the people who were sick went to the hospital in the ambulance, and the police car was parked at the police station. And as my children just discovered as I was writing this post, they make great ‘hiding places’ for all sorts of things, like pine cones!

Every classroom should have a gigantic block space. My kids create amazing, unique things with traditional wooden blocks.
I work with 3 & 4 year olds. They love to be in the block center but it has become stagnated because we really don’t have any buildings. I have bought in boxes and other things to try to spice it up but the blocks are starting to be used like lightsabers or swords, a no no in my room. I think that they would really enjoy the towns. I had them at my previous center.
Now if I could get anything else for my room, it would be that 4 in 1 easel that flips. Our easel is on its last legs and I am now try to organize it and clean it to make it look nice but I don’t think anything will fix that
That would be an amazing addition to the block center!! The children at school would love something new to enhance their play.

This is an awesome product, they had these same buildings at a center I used to work at. But now in a private school we supply our own products, so I have converted Kleenex boxes to make buildings like this for my block center. The child love using these (well my cheap version) for our community helper lesson, and putting numbers on the buildings where they have to put that many people or cars in the building helps them with number recognition. These little buildings have so many ways they can be incorporated into a classroom curriculum. Good luck for those in this contest
….

My favorite guidecraft products are the light tables – there are so many different ways these could be used in preschool. I teach early childhood special education for ages 3-5 and one of our themes is “community”. We talk about different places in the community as well as community workers. We have lots of boys in our group, and I’m sure these would be a popular addition to their favorite toys – cars.
